New Jersey lockdown\nrules: What residents need to know about stay-at-home order<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Gov. Phil Murphy has ordered New Jersey\nresidents to stay home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Jersey will go into near-lockdown mode\nstarting Saturday night after Gov. Phil Murphy<\/a> announced he is ordering its 9 million residents to stay at home <\/a>except for necessary travel and mandating that all\nnon-essential retail businesses in the state close until further notice to help\nbattle the spread of the coronavirus<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOnly if we need you out there, only if\nyou\u2019re an essential service in which case we do need you \u2014 otherwise, stay at\nhome,” Murphy said during a press briefing\nat Rutgers-Newark.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s a look at what the executive order<\/a> means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SO I HAVE TO STAY IN MY HOME?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As much as possible. But there are some exceptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, Murphy \u201dstrongly\u201c suggested that people\nrefrain from non-essential travel between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Now, he said,\nthat\u2019s a 24-hour order to keep off the roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few people are excepted: health-care workers, law\nenforcement, emergency responders, members of the media, some federal\nofficials, people who assist low-income residents (such as food bank workers),\nand those who need to get to work at businesses allowed to remain open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Otherwise, people can leave the house only for essential\nneeds (such groceries, food, or medicine), to visit family and close friends,\nor to seek medical attention. You can also go outside for walks or exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When in public, people must practice social distancing by\nstaying at least six feet apart from others, except \u201cimmediate family members,\ncaretakers, household members, or romantic partners,\u201d the order says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bottom line: The governor is ordering you to stay home\nunless it\u2019s really necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe need you to just stay home,\u201d Murphy\nsaid during a news briefing\nSaturday at Rutgers-Newark. <\/a>\u201cWe\nhave to change our behaviors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the governor specifically urged\npeople not to go to the Jersey Shore<\/a> if\nthey have part-time residences there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT\u2019S CLOSED?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murphy had already indefinitely shuttered<\/a> a\nnumber of businesses amid the outbreak, including indoor malls, movie theaters,\ncasinos, gyms, amusement parks, barber shops, salons, libraries and more. He\nalso limited restaurants to takeout and delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now it extends to the vast majority of retail businesses\nin the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT CAN STAY OPEN?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Numerous retail businesses are allowed to remain open<\/a>:\ngrocery stores, food banks, pharmacies, medical marijuana dispensaries, gas\nstations, auto mechanics and repair services, convenience stores, banks,\nhardware and home improvement stores, laundromats, dry cleaners, printing and\noffice supply shops, pet stores, stores that sell supplies for young children,\nand mail and delivering shops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Restaurants, bars, and liquor stores<\/a> can also remain\nopen, as long as they stick to takeout or delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manufacturing, industrial, logistics, ports, heavy\nconstruction, shipping, food production, food delivery, and other commercial\noperations may continue operating. But they must keep staff at a minimal level\non site to make sure \u201cessential operations can continue,\u201d according to the\norder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medical facilities \u2014 including veterinarians and physical\ntherapy \u2014 can continue to operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Child day care centers will also remain\nopen. Murphy has said many emergency and essential workers need a place\nto watch their children.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The governor\u2019s office also said landscaping businesses\nand hotels are also allowed to stay open, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other businesses should allow people to work from home,\nif possible, the governor said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plus, the office said, garbage and\nrecycling collection will continue. So will public transportation, though\non modified schedules.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT ABOUT GATHERINGS?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murphy has barred any social gatherings \u2014 parties,\nfunerals, concerts, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent days, he limited them to 250 people and then\nreduced it to 50 people. Now all are banned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis decision is not an easy one, and it pains me that\nimportant life moments will not be celebrated the way we are accustomed\nto,” Murphy said. \u201dOur singular goal is to make sure we get through this\nemergency so you can safely gather with family and friends later and enjoy many\nmore wedding and birthdays to come.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHO IS CONSIDERED AN ESSENTIAL\nWORKER ALLOWED TO TRAVEL?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Health-care and medical-services workers, members of the\nmedia, law enforcement agencies, emergency responders, certain federal\ngovernment workers, and those who work at businesses that are allowed to remain\nopen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHEN DOES THIS GO INTO EFFECT?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

9 p.m. Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s unclear. Murphy said he expects the crisis will be\n\u201cmeasured in weeks to months. … This is not next week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT IF I DON\u2019T COMPLY?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murphy didn\u2019t provide specifics on what the penalties\nwould be, but he said: “If folks are monkeying around, we will take\naction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials have said any people or businesses that don\u2019t\ncomply will be prosecuted for a disorderly person\u2019s offense at the local level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHY TAKE THIS ACTION?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials say the more people keep their distance from\neach other \u2014 otherwise known as \u201csocial distancing\u201d \u2014 it will help slow the\nspread of the virus, which causes the illness COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSocial distancing is the key to stopping this,”\nstate Health Commissioner Judy Persichilli said. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing more\nsophisticated about it. We don\u2019t have a vaccine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An NJ Advance Media analysis of data<\/a> from a Rutgers University study shows in a\nworst-case scenario, with the minimal amount of social distancing, 1 in 7\npeople could contract the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HOW MUCH HAS THE VIRUS ALREADY\nSPREAD?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The coronavirus is a pandemic that has\ninfected and killed thousands across the globe. In New Jersey, officials have\nconfirmed at least 1,327 known cases, with 16 confirmed deaths.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials say they expect that number\nto increase\nsignificantly<\/a> in the coming days as testing expands\nand there is more evidence of \u201ccommunity spread.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The state has not released how many negative tests have\ncome back or how many people have recovered from the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
